Hej allesammen!

Hi everyone! Here it is, the mini guide to Washington, D.C.. It has taken a long time to get this post ready between image editing, writing and all of that. I hope you guys like it. We were, as I mentioned earlier, only in D.C. for two days, so the guide is based on what we had time to see and explore. Of course, there are a lot of other things to explore in Washington, but here is a few good tips.

I recommend for you to visit Washington, D.C. in the end of March or in the month of April, because you can see all the stunning Japanese cherry blossom trees and participate in the Cherry Blossom Festival. The Festival runs from March 20th to April 15th. When we visited  D.C. the cherry blossoms had already begun to bloom in the most beautiful pink hues. The city is filled with cherry blossoms all over in between buildings and in the many parks.

Logan Circle

When we arrived in D. C., we had a bit of time before we could check into our hotel. Therefore, we ate lunch and walked around in the area surrounding the hotel. I was very impressed with the many old and beautiful buildings! So much soul and charm. The houses on the pictures, were located around Logan Circle, it was a really wonderful area!

China Chilcano (418 7th Street NW)

China Chilcano (418 7th Street NW)

In the evening we ate the most delicious 12-course dinner at China Chilcano, which is a fusion between Chinese and Peruvian cuisine. It was so delicious! We chose a special menu, so we had a bit of everything on the menu. We got dumplings, wantons, ceviche, rice and noodle dishes and two desserts. There was so much food, and we had difficulties eating it all, because there was simply so much. Therefore, be very hungry if you order the 12-course dinner, haha! The courses were original, nicely presented and extremely tasteful. If you like Asian food, I can highly recommend China Chilcano. The restaurant also serves delicious sushi. Their cocktails were very good, fresh and fruity. I got a passion fruit cocktail, which is a always a favorite in my book. The desserts were extremely delicious and fresh. The restaurant is huge, and the atmosphere could be a bit more intimate, but the food is definitely worth the visit.

A little side note; book a table a few days or weeks before you arrive, if you want to eat at specific restaurants. We made the mistake of not having booked any tables, because the trip to D.C. was very spontaneous and last minute. It turned out to be difficult to get a table at the various restaurants, everything was booked in advance.

The Darcy (1515 Rhode Island Ave NW)

We actually ordered our hotel room on the way down to Washington in the car. Long live cell phones and hotel booking apps. We would initially like to stay at The Line DC, which seemed to be the most beautiful hotel, the rooms looked gorgeous, but it was only possible to book a room for one night, and we wanted to spend two nights at the hotel. We therefore ended up booking a room at The Darcy, which also turned out to be a good hotel. The room was nice and cozy. Most importantly the beds were comfortable. I had brought my own pillow, because I am so picky when it comes to pillows, hah! American pillows tends to be a little to big for my taste. We were not entirely satisfied with the staff, since we had to wait an hour extra to get our room upon arrival, without them really explaining why. All in all The Darcy is a perfectly fine hotel and great for a weekend stay in D.C.. The hotel is also within walking distance to all the monuments.

Slipstream (14th Street NW)

I got one of the best avocado toasts I have ever tasted, slightly spicy and with goat cheese. My boyfriend’s breakfast sandwich also tasted heavenly. We shared a cinnamon bun which was perfectly soft and juicy. The coffee and chai latte was also amazing!

Monumenter

  • The White House
  • Washington Monument
  • World War II Memorial
  • Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
  • Lincoln Memorial
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Albert Einstein Memorial

The monuments

After breakfast it was time for the big walk around D.C. to see all the many monuments, statues and buildings as the city has to offer. Here is what we saw:

  • The White House
  • Washington Monument
  • World War II Memorial
  • Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool
  • Lincoln Memorial
  • Vietnam Veterans Memorial
  • Albert Einstein Memorial
All the monuments are situated in walking distance from each other which is great. I was especially impressed by the Lincoln Memorial and The Reflecting Pool, it was magnificent. Unfortunately, I was a tad disappointed with the White House, there were three fences in front of the house and it was generally difficult to see the house and to take pictures of it. I completely understand the safety level has to be very high, but it was still a bit disappointing.

&Pizza (2224 F St NW, Hotel Hive)

It was so delicious and the crust was amazing. I can totally recommend the place if you are looking for a quick lunch. After lunch we walked over to an area called Foggy Bottom, which is known for its old beautiful houses and buildings. Here we shot some cool photos for the blog, which I am posting tomorrow.

Capitol Hill

Capitol Hill

After walking a lot of kilometres we decided to bike down to Capitol Hill. We rented two city bikes, which you can rent all over the city, and headed towards The Capitol. It was a beautiful bike ride with a view of The Capitol all the way down. Washington D.C. has quite a lot of bike paths, so it feels relatively safe to bike. The building was super impressive and iconic, it is clearly worth a visit. Then we biked back to the hotel after having taken 23,420 steps and walked 18 km, haha! My legs were very sore, but I love seeing a city by foot instead of driving around. It is just another way to experience a city.

Bourbon Steak (2800 Pennsylvania Ave NW, The Four Seasons Hotel)

We just relaxed for a few hours at the hotel before we headed out to dine at Bourbon Steak –  a really old school steak place! I love hip and trendy restaurants, but an old classic steakhouse never fails. The staff was amazing, so professional and sweet. The cocktails were magnificent. For appetizers we had a caesar salad and for the main course we got a Ribeye Steak, classic bearnaise sauce, fries, truffle mac´n´cheese and Brussels sprouts. So infinitely good! For dessert we got a smoked s’mores and it was absolutely delicious. The way the dessert was presented was genius. They served us a glass bell filled with smoke, when the waiter moved the bell the dessert appeared behind the smoke. Everything about that night was truly magical, only problem was that we got so full, haha!

Fruitive (11th St NW & Palmer Alley)

Fruitive har dog flere locations over hele byen, som kunne tænkes at have lidt bedre plads.

On the last day we ate a quick breakfast at Fruitive, which serves 100% plant based dishes. They serve waffles, smoothies, avocado toasts and smoothie bowls. It tasted great, but the place was very small and had relatively few seats. However, Fruitive has several locations throughout the city which might be more spacious.

United States Botanic Garden (100 Maryland Ave SW)

Brunch steder: Little Red Fox, Sally’s Middle Name, The Bird, Whaley’s, Fare Well, Big Bear Cafe, Peacock Cafe, Nuvegan og DC Harvest.

Restauranter: Timber Pizza Company, Range, Himitsu, Bad Saint, Izakaya Seki, Compass Rose, Convival, The Dabney, Kinship, The Red Hen, Hazel, Iron Gate, Rose’s Luxury og Bombay Club.

We ended our D. C. visit with a tour of the botanic garden. We agreed on making it a tradition to visit botanical gardens, when we travel. We love the one, located in Brooklyn, and there is also a beautiful botanical garden in the Bronx. The D.C. one was also very impressive and beautiful. I get so happy when visiting a botanic garden. It is almost like going down south for a bit, with palm trees and a tropical climate!
The restaurant scene is surprisingly good in D.C., which I was not aware of. Here are some additional restaurants for inspiration.

Brunch spots: Little Red Fox, Sally’s Middle Name, The Bird, Whaley’s, danger Well, Big Bear Cafe, Peacock Cafe, Nuvegan and DC Harvest.
